Conversations With the Muse

The concept of a muse as a guiding spirit or a source of inspiration is a familiar one. It is that quality in ourselves that becomes elusive when we are struggling to keep up with life events and feel creatively blocked.

The muse in music, in amusement (play), and in musings (contemplations) gives us access to our creative energy. The playful practice of art making through spontaneous painting, drawing, collage and written word gives powerful and immediate access to the symbolic language of the soul.

In my book Conversations with the Muse: The Art Journal as Inner Guide (available on Blurb) I share the process I developed for myself as well as the groups I have been teaching since 2006. These playful explorations using experimental mixed media techniques have informed my larger paintings and inspired the works of scores of students since.
